Tarun Tahiliani

Tarun Tahiliani is one of India’s most celebrated and noted fashion designers. He is known for tailoring rich and opulent apparels with modern western silhouettes. Though belonging to a family with a business in oil field equipment; an MBA graduate from The Wharton School, Tahiliani was sure that he wanted to make a career in the fashion industry. Spotting a great business opportunity in fine clothing and  couture industry, Tahiliani launched his brand Ensemble, along with his model wife Sailja, in 1987. Ensemble was the first ever multi-brand luxury store in India. The store launched its label Ahilian in collaboration with other designer labels that belonged to fashion designers like Abu Jani & Rohit Khosla, Sandeep Khosla, Anuradha Mafatlal, Neil Bieff, Anita Shivdasani, and Sunita Kapoor. The store became extremely popular among the social butterflies of Mumbai. His brand received some success on the runway, after which Tahiliani started to take a closer look at fashion. While he started sketching designs, he attained an associate degree from the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York. Following this, in 1995 he launched his brand Tarun Tahiliani Design Studio in New Delhi. He thus led a fashion revolution in India, through the means of his signature eponymous collection of Couture, Occasion wear and ready to wear outfits. His several gigs such as his solo show in September 1994 in London and his 2003 show in Milan Fashion Week, led to fame and recognition, as the first Indian designer to have ever presented their designs at Milan. Since then, Tahiliani has presented his work at various ramp shows in New York, London, Tokyo, Dubai, Singapore, Hong Kong, Moscow, Durban, and Karachi. His flagship store in Mehrauli, which was launched in 2017, embodies Tahiliani’s quest for Indian modernity. The store offers collections that are a marriage between Indian elements and contemporary sensibilities. His designs are also readily available in different parts of the world, in stores like Eickhoff (Germany), Bijenkorf (Amsterdam), Elenora (Rome), Gio Moretti, Via Della Spiga (Milan), Eleven Monte Carlo (Monaco), Podium (Moscow), Scoop and Gus Mayer (New York) and Josephs (London). Tahiliani is also the founding member of the Fashion Design Council of India. Recipient of several fashion awards like Designer of the Year Award (2002), Moet and Chandon Fashion Tribute Award for Designer of the Year for India (2004), F Award for Best Women's Designer for Couture (2004), Women’s Wear Designer of the Year (2007), Fashion Legend trophy at the GQ Men of the Year Awards (2018), and India Fashion Awards for contribution to fashion (2020); Tahiliani is popular for both his bridal and groom's wear collections.
