India is a place with various religious and cultural beliefs. Especially when talking about the hindu religion, the different Vedas and other religious scripts make it the most complicated yet the richest tradition. Many aspects of this religion are still unexplored. And the thing is that these days’ people are so busy in their lives that they actually do not get time for knowing the logic behind certain values and customs they believe in.
Just to keep on following a particular thing without realizing its importance is wrong. The Indian Hindu wedding is one of such occasions that have plenty of customs in it. And these customs raise quiet a lot of questions. Today we are going to discuss about an essential part of ‘Solah Sringar’ that is the Toe ring. ‘Solah Sringar’ are the 16 make-up products and accessories that a hindu lady wears after getting married.
The Toe ring is known as ‘bichhiya’ in almost every part of India. This ring is worn by women since ancient times, in the longest, that is the second toe finger. Back then the people must have had the knowledge of the purpose of wearing it. But now-a-days they just wear it as their ancestors have been doing so or even at some places they put it on as a style statement. Every small ritual has a solid purpose behind it, in every religion. In the same way this small ‘bichhiya’ also has scientific as well as religious importance of its own.
It is said that the second toe finger is directly linked to the uterus that is the organ in which a lady holds an infant for nine months. So, when you walk and do all sorts of work while wearing a silver toe ring, it creates friction and thus keeps the uterus healthy. If you are desperately wishing for an add-on in your family then I must tell you that it also increases the chance of conception.
We all know by now that the first sexual intercourse is quiet painful for the ladies. And as per the old times, a woman is assumed to be a virgin at the time of her wedding, thus wearing a toe ring helps in reducing the pain during the whole process. This ring also helps in maintaining the sexual desires and drains the negativity of the body. This in turn keeps the woman energetic and sexually active.
In few parts of India ‘Bichhiya’ is also worn by the young maidens in the third finger of the toe. As, the third toe finger is connected with the whole reproductive system, it helps in reducing the pain caused during the menstrual cycle. Usually, period cramps are pathetic but if with the certain acupressure trick we can get rid of it then why not! In fact the ring also eliminates all types of period related problems like PCOD, Ovary cysts etc.
As everybody knows that silver is a good conductor, the ring absorbs polar energy which the earth radiates and transfers it to the woman. Hence it keeps all the vital organs of the body active and healthy. It rejuvenates her and makes her feel fresh and alive.
The incubation period is the time of nine months in which the fetus stays inside the mother’s womb. Wearing toe ring reduces the risk of miscarriage or un-healthy pregnancy. It makes the uterus solid and capable of providing the baby an ultimate shield successfully during the complete period of 9 months.
These were some scientific reasons to wear the Toe ring. Now, before proceeding towards the religious reasons here’s an interesting fact that the Tamilian men too wear the toe rings, though they wear it in simple designs but they do for sure. The reason behind it is that the people in ancient times used to walk without any footwear. And the girls at that time weren’t allowed to lift up their heads and so by seeing at the foot of the men they used to find out whether they are hitched or not!
The ladies wear the toe rings in both the legs. This shows that she has two responsibilities throughout her life. She is a wife to her husband as well as a sister to her brother. Both the people are equally important to her. In case, the husband dies and the woman becomes a widow then her brother will offer her protection for the rest of her life.
The engagement ring is worn in the ring finger as it has nerves that touch your heart. In the same way the toe ring is worn in the second finger which has nerves that passes through your heart to the uterus. So, it not only links you with your spouse but also it links your heart to your uterus.
According to the vedic astrology, the silver toe rings pleases ‘Chandra Dev’ that is the lord moon. Moon if pleased, makes the temperament of the person calm and composed. He gives the person the strength to face every situation with a cool mindset.
The significance of ‘Bichhiya’ is from the times of Ramayana. When Ravana abducted Sita from the jungle, she dropped few ornaments from the ‘pushpak viman’ that was a sort of ancient time’s airplane. She threw them, so that Lord Rama would trace her back. Those ornaments included the toe ring as well.
It is always advisable to wear silver toe rings and not the gold ones. As gold is a pious metal and putting it on your feet will be an act of showing disrespect to God. Another thing which one should keep in mind that you should never gift your toe ring to anyone as it is directly related to the health of your partner and can affect him badly.
